Susan R. Amarino is President and owner of Liaison Multilingual Services, Inc. With more than two decades of international business and language services experience, Susan, through her company, provides translating, interpreting and desktop publishing for clients globally. Susan’s company, Liaison Multilingual is a certified vendor with U.S. Federal Government and is a certified member of WBENC, Women’s Business Enterprise, as a woman-owned business.
Leading the ALC Standard Task Force Committee, Susan maintains a strong passion in working to create a high standard for language service companies. Directing daily operations at Liaison Multilingual provides Susan opportunities to professionally serve clients and increase business proficiency. With many years experience in ASTM International, Susan offers sound advice and educated hypothesis for ASTM’s future endeavors. As the ASTM Subcommittee Chair for F43.05, Quality Assurance in Language Services, Susan steadily demonstrates her leadership skills which are imperative toward creating a performance standard that will lay a foundation for greater appreciation of language services and a more prestigious position at the table of global commerce.
Susan is a native Coloradoan, born in Denver, CO. She graduated from Broomfield (CO) High School, and the University of New Mexico (UNM). After completing her education at UNM, Amarino joined Up With People, a philanthropic organization with the objectives of global understanding and peace. As a marketing professional, Susan introduced a worldwide cast of musical performers to international audiences throughout the USA, Europe, Japan, Canada and Australia. It was Up With People which attracted Amarino to various languages and cultures throughout the world.
Gabriela Lemoine is CEO of Hispano Language Advisory, a company she founded in 2006 to provide translation and desktop publishing services. Ms. Lemoine earned a degree in translation, holds an MBA and is ATA-certified. She serves as president of the Argentina Association of Language Companies (AASL) and as advisory board member at the American Chamber of Commerce - Córdoba, Argentina. She is very active in local and international trade associations. She is a popular presenter on business and technical topics appealing to linguists and company owners, both in her home country and abroad. At Hispano, Ms. Lemoine is the main sponsor of the innovative internal e-learning program for linguists. She also volunteers at several entrepreneurship and empowerment non-profit organizations.
Kathleen Diamond is a consultant, entrepreneur, and business leader in the language services industry. In 1979, she founded Language Learning Enterprises, Inc. (LLE®), a full-service language company based in Washington, D.C. She is recognized
as an early pioneer in “Telephone Interpreting,” launching LLE-LINK in the 1990s. Over the next 19 years, under her leadership, the company grew from a sole proprietorship to a dynamic, multimillion-dollar corporation, serving a wide
range of clients in both the private and public sectors across the United States and worldwide. In 2009, Kathleen negotiated the sale of LLE to CyraCom International, a language services company in Tucson, Ariz.
Today, Kathleen continues her work advocating for the importance and relevance of language services as commissioner, vice-chair for outreach on the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), incoming director on the board
of ALC, and membership secretary of ASTM F43 Language Services and Products.
Kathleen's consultancy focuses on helping companies grow by increasing value, maximizing resources, diversifying revenue streams, and building a strong succession plan.
Kathleen earned her M.A. and B.A. from the University of Florida and is an alumna of IES Abroad, Nantes, France. She is fluent in both Spanish and French.
Lelani Craig has been in the language industry most of her life. Born in Argentina and later moving to the US as a young girl, she learned first hand the importance of being able to communicate with those who speak other languages.
Lelani started interpreting in high school for local law enforcement which led her to a career in language services. She later became a lead conference interpreter, translator and voice-over talent for the LDS church. Her reputation grew locally and nationally which led her to create and build CommGap International Language Services almost 17 years ago. As President and CEO, Lelani has led CommGap to become one of the leaders in language services internationally. Lelani has served on numerous boards and panels both promoting and defending the need for better qualified language professionals to help “bridge the international communication gap”.
Kevin McQuire has been active in the language industry since 1992 and has dedicated his career to our industry. Mr. McQuire successfully launched a startup LSC from 1992-2000 grow to be one of the largest on the West Coast; then moved to Chicago to launch his current LSC which he did in November 2000. Kevin attended Cypress College as well as California State University, Fullerton with an emphasis of pre-law/Human Resources and later went on to obtain his BSBM from the University of Phoenix. Mr. McQuire helped define legal interpretation requirements in California during the early/mid 1990’s and has since provided linguistic support for Pope Francis/Vatican City in Rome; 7 world Presidents/Prime Ministers; as well as most of the top Fortune 100 CEOs. Kevin is often called upon to help solve complex or high profile simultaneous interpretation needs and support, worldwide.
Melissa earned her way up the Barbier chain of command, by starting out a project manager, and then spent eight years as a bilingual educator. She returned to Barbier and soon became the director of sales. In 2013, she took over as Barbier’s president and is the 2nd generation owner. She holds a BA in Liberal Studies, a MAT from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Post MA ESOL and Bilingual Education Endorsement from Pacific University. She serves on various language committees and trade organizations and has been a featured speaker at her clients’ trade shows. She is passionate about language, travel, fine arts and her family.
As the Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Interpreters Unlimited, Shamus Sayed knows how important it is to find a solution when language creates a barrier to effective communication. By increasing contract wins, developing relationships with industry associations and forming strategic partnerships with local and national language service providers, Sayed has increased access to professional language services nationwide for immigrant and limited English proficient communities, as well as Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing populations.
Paul Tracy is the Co-Founder of Partners Interpreting and for the past nine years has led business development and operations for the company. His background and training is as a National Certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for over 20 years. Paul’s introduction to the language and Deaf community was through family: his father is Deaf-blind, and Paul is a native user of ASL. Paul is active in the ASL industry, both locally and nationally. He serves as a consultant to language companies on industry technology as well as on the management of sign language interpreting services. As a member of the ALC, Paul is an active volunteer, serving on the planning committees of two different conferences as well chairing both the UNConference and Annual Conference committees.
Karen Decker is the owner and President of the International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) in Washington, DC. ICLS is an accredited institution that provides internships, language training and testing services in English and over 85 foreign languages to a wide variety of clients. They include the alphabet soup of government agencies, the Defense Department, international organizations, academic institutions and corporate entities. Karen’s journey began one month after earning her teaching degree from Wheaton College (MA), when she served two years in Yemen as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English. She then moved to Washington DC, where she landed a position as an ESL teacher at ICLS. She rose through the company from teacher, to Director of the Foreign Language Division, where she managed and supervised the teachers and students performing training services and studying under ICLS’ government contracts. After the untimely passing of the founder in 1996, Karen was appointed President; in 1998 she became the owner. Over the following twenty years, under her leadership, ICLS’ revenue increased by 1000% and its reputation grew as a leader in the language training community. Karen has been an active member of the language training community, having served on various boards, task forces, and associations. She has been VP for Advocacy on the Executive Board of EnglishUSA, Coordinator of the English Language Trainers and Administrators professional network of NAFSA, and President of the Association of Proprietary Language Schools. Karen also served a 3-year term as a Commissioner for the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). She is currently the Chair of ASTM’s Subcommittee on Foreign Language Instruction, which she has led for over twenty years. Her subcommittee developed the very first ASTM standard for the Language Services Industry. Karen believes that language learning is a life-long commitment; her love of languages started in high school where she studied French and Latin. In college she continued with French and added Spanish, and in the Peace Corps she received intensive training in Arabic.
Mary Connor has over 15 years of association management experience, and she is proficient in leadership and governance, financial management, program and membership development and marketing-communications. Mary was the founder and president of an AMC, managing several national and regional trade associations ranging from industrial manufacturing/distribution, scientific, energy to professional societies. After the sale of her AMC, Mary became partner and COO in a marketing-communications company specializing in high-end visual communications for Fortune 500 companies. She is a Qualified Association Specialist, is credentialed as a LEED Green Associate (U.S. Green Building Council) and is Six Sigma Lean/DFSS certified. She is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the American Society for Quality and is active in several non-profit organizations.
